Airport is Critical Lifeline for Essential Humanitarian Aid
Neoloy Geocell enables the UN to guarantee the steady flow of humanitarian aid with a strong, durable and low maintenance solution for a key airfield.
South Sudan – the degraded Rubkona airfield in South Sudan needed rehabilitation to ensure the continuous supply of UN medicine and foodstuffs for millions of needy people facing displacement, food shortages and chronic underdevelopment. The airfield’s rehabilitation was necessary to stabilize UN operations in the region to ensure the delivery of essential aid to these refugee populations, literally helping the UN to save lives.
Neoloy Geocells were selected by the UN in an international tender due to an optimized design. The Project included soil stabilization and reinforcement of the runways, service areas and access roads (including drainage) for the airfield, and doubling the runway size to accommodate larger aircraft (e.g., C130 Hercules).
PRS Neoloy Geocells provided the following:
- 40% reduction in pavement thickness – due to PRS optimized design.
- 15% improved performance over conventional design using local sandy soils.
- 35-45% less construction time
- Low maintenance – routine surfacing, no imported gravel required.
